a little introduction to our community

Hi, my name is Yuberniz Orengo, but everyone calls me Yubi. I’m 18 and about to enter college for the first time.

I’m going to Kent State University in Kent, Ohio to study Fashion Merchandizing. I’m moving all the way from Miami, FL, where I was born and raised. I’ve been away before, but not for more than a month, so we’ll see how the scenery change gets to me! I graduated from a design and fine arts based high school, with high risks.

I was selected from 800 applications to fill 150 high school freshman spots through a crazy audition process, that I could say rivals universities in rigor. Through that, I’ve learned basic fashion construction, had a classic fine arts curriculum, and learned the ins and outs of the fashion industry. We even have our own fashion show at the end of the year!

Going through all of that madness, I realized what I really wanted to do in the fashion industry: be the behind the scenes. Not necessarily the designer, but being the person who helps to run the Forever 21s and Zara’s of the world, being a creative director, marketing, the business side of the clothes. Maybe eventually be a designer, but in the mass market, ready to wear area, where there are so many more jobs and opportunities.

Breaking into the fashion industry via the artistic route is strenuous and, not to mention, disappointing to many young, fledgling designers.”All I’m doing is copying trends and the Chanels, Guccis, and Dolce and Gabbanas of the world” is what I could say is the call of the young designer working for Banana Republic. Meanwhile, I’m prepared for the reality of the fashion world, not to mention, there are the people who forecast trends, oversee designs and send them to China to be manufactured, the many jobs that run what is really 99% of the fashion industry: making clothes for and getting clothes to actual people. Making bras for the Adriana Limas of the world is great and all, but what about the rest of us? From the Lane Bryants to the Limited Toos (now called Justice) to the Chicos, that is what the fashion world truly is: dressing the world.

I want to live comfortably, and work comfortably, being around what I like. That can’t be too much to ask for right?

I’m an avid cosplayer (a Japanese English portmanteau of “Costume Play” aka a person who runs a around in costumes at conventions (you know, like Comic Con? That happens all over the United States, just not as many famous people.)

I also founded a non-profit group that goes to conventions and we fix people costumes on site! Trust me, more accidents happen than you think. We don’t just sit around listening to panels and talking, we’re running around and having fun!

We’re called the Cosplay Medics! Check out their facebook and twitter!
